A Trip to the Salton Sea

Last week we went on a photographic adventure, a two-day trip to refresh the spirit and get some more art on the walls! The Salton Sea is gigantic man made saline lake, created by accident, that has turned into an ecological disaster. It is a place of abandoned buildings and discarded dreams.
If you would like to learn more about the Salton Sea, there is a documentary worth checking out called Plagues and Pleasures on the Salton Sea.
We didn’t get to explore as much as we wanted, so we’re making plans for another trip in a few weeks!
We drove through Anza Borrego with the intent to go straight home, however, it began to snow once we got to a little town called Julian, so we were forced to stay the night. I’m really glad we did stay though, because we got to experience Julian’s charms, meet some of the nicest people ever, and eat the most delicious cinnamon roll!

Waking up the next morning in the little town of Julian….it was freezing cold!

Mordecai

On Saturday, before heading out to a wedding in Camarillo, Isaac and I found an American Kestrel with a busted wing! What an amazingly beautiful falcon. So elegant. We named him Mordecai (after Richie’s falcon in The Royal Tenenbaums) and were able to keep and feed him over the holiday weekend. He regained much of his strength. We gave him to the Orange County Wildlife Foundation in Westminster yesterday, however, Isaac and I were so disappointed to find out that we probably won’t be able to know if his wing is fixable due to a confidentiality clause for rescued wildlife. We only hope Mordecai is able to fly free again…..
