I often get e-mails with questions from other photographers, so I’ve posted some of the more frequently asked questions here:
What Equipment do you shoot with/what do you recommend for the starting photographer?
It’s truly important, even when first starting out, to invest in good lens glass that at least goes down to an aperture of 2.8. It is also a good idea to buy all of your equipment from a reputable dealer, like B & H photo. I’ve heard horror stories of people buying gray market lemons and having numerous problems with their equipment later on. Here’s a list of what we carry to every wedding….
Canon 5D’s
Canon 5D Mark II (the files from this camera are amazing!)
70-200mm 2.8 IS (I shoot with this lens about 60% of the time)
85mm 1.2 (a must for super lowlight and stunning portraits)
45mm 2.8 tilt shift (Isaac’s favorite lens, single out focus)
50mm 1.4 (back up portrait lens and super sharp formals)
24-70mm 2.8 (used mostly for details and getting ready)
24mm 1.4 (love this lens for super sharp overall and dancing shots)
16-35mm 2.8 (back-up wide angle and used for super wide shots)
100mm macro 2.8 (mostly used for ring shots)
Canon 580EX II Speedlights
Litepanels Micro LED video light (used for ring shots and soft portrait light at night)
tons and tons of rechargeable NiMH batteries
pocket wizards
lightstand and Quantum Qflash for the reception (we use it to create back light and separation at night and on the dance floor)
What actions do you use to post process your images/do you sell actions?
I mostly use a combination of the Boutwell’s actions - Totally Rad Actions and Red Leaf Studio actions - Vintage Actions and Jesh de Rox Colorshift along with other actions I’ve created. I never really do the same exact thing to an image, and I usually never use an action to its full strength.
What lab to you use/recommend?
We use Pro DPI for prints - they have excellent turn around times and customer service, and we love their eco-friendly printing options!
Do you offer mentoring sessions?
At this time, we do offer one on one personal mentoring sessions and phone consultations where we discuss all aspects of running a photography business, including photography and editing skills, brand building and web presence. Half day and full day sessions include a sample photo shoot with a couple and all shoots include notes and sample business forms. Please contact us for more information on pricing and what is included in an hour, half day, and full day session.
